REA’s May Encore Auction: Historic Baseball Card Sets & Rare Memorabilia

Robert Edward Auctions is currently dazzling sports enthusiasts and collectors alike with its May Encore auction, an extraordinary event boasting over 3,600 lots filled with treasures from the realm of sports collectibles. With offerings that span from complete sets of 1950s baseball cards to unique vintage items such as a check autographed by Honus Wagner following the end of his illustrious baseball career, this auction is a haven for enthusiasts of all things sports memorabilia.

Commencing on a thrilling note last Thursday, this auction extravaganza will extend over a ten-day period, showcasing a captivating array of items that traverse the history of baseball, touching upon early artifacts and making their way to modern sports card marvels. Some of the early star attractions of this auction include the T206 White Border Ty Cobb Bat Off Shoulder card dating back to 1909-1911, distinguished by its rare Uzit back, as well as a Ty Cobb rookie card from the 1907 Wolverine News Postcard series, both standing out as prized possessions for avid collectors.

Among the many treasures awaiting bidders are vintage baseball card sets like the complete 1957 Topps set and the nearly whole 1958 Topps set, alongside a selection of top-quality cards from the 1950s Bowman and Topps editions, including rookie cards of iconic baseball figures such as Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, and Sandy Koufax. Adding to the allure is the chance to partake in a complete set break of the legendary 1951 Bowman set, a rare opportunity for collectors to own a piece of baseball history.

In addition to the remarkable card sets on offer, the auction also features an assortment of captivating memorabilia items, including a ticket stub from the 1957 NFL Championship Game, providing a window into the past glory of football, and a 1920 Real Photo Postcard capturing the Harvard football team that graced the Rose Bowl—an intriguing piece of sporting history in its own right.

REA President Brian Dwyer shared his enthusiasm for the auction, emphasizing the exceptional quality of the lots following the tremendously successful $15.4 million spring sale. Dwyer highlighted the strong interest shown by collectors and the premium nature of the items that are currently up for bidding, setting the stage for an unforgettable auction experience.

For enthusiasts and collectors eager to participate, the auction will remain open until May 19 on the REA website, offering an exciting opportunity to acquire rare and high-end sports memorabilia. Beyond being a platform for acquiring prized collectibles, this auction serves as a celebration of the rich and storied history encapsulated within sports memorabilia, inviting bidders to partake in the legacy of these iconic artifacts.
