Babe Ruth’s ‘Called Shot’ Jersey at Heritage Auctions

This summer, the baseball world is abuzz with excitement as Heritage Auctions prepares to feature one of the most iconic artifacts in the sport’s history: Babe Ruth’s “called shot” jersey. This gray road flannel, with an estimated value of $30 million, is expected to break records and captivate sports memorabilia enthusiasts worldwide.

The jersey’s legacy dates back to the legendary 1932 World Series game at Wrigley Field, where Ruth famously pointed towards the outfield and then delivered a home run against the Chicago Cubs. This moment has become the stuff of baseball folklore, sparking debates and fascination among fans and historians alike.

Photo matching conducted by two separate companies has provided compelling evidence supporting the jersey’s authenticity, further enhancing its allure. The provenance of this historic artifact has been meticulously traced back to Ruth himself, solidifying its place as a priceless piece of American sports history.

Sold previously in 2005 for $944,000, the jersey underwent careful conservation work by the Textile Conservation Workshop to repair a tear while preserving its original form. The design of the jersey aligns perfectly with the style worn by the Yankees in 1932, adding another layer of significance to its historical value.

Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Auctions at Heritage, emphasized the jersey’s unparalleled importance in the world of sports memorabilia. He stated that Ruth’s World Series jersey is set to become the most expensive sports collectible ever sold at auction, surpassing the record currently held by a Mickey Mantle 1952 Topps card.

The meticulous analysis of the jersey’s unique features, such as button placement and specific stains, has played a crucial role in verifying its authenticity. Authenticators like MeiGray have scrutinized every detail, treating each game-worn jersey as a distinct piece akin to a fingerprint. This attention to detail provides bidders with undeniable proof of the jersey’s connection to the historic moment.

The tale of Babe Ruth’s “called shot” continues to enthrall baseball enthusiasts, showcasing not only his on-field prowess but also his larger-than-life persona. Despite differing accounts of the event, Ruth’s bravado and skill on that fateful day elevated him to legendary status, ensuring his place in the annals of sports history.

The jersey will be showcased at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Cleveland before it goes up for auction on August 23-25. This event promises to attract collectors and fans eager to own a piece of baseball lore and highlights the escalating demand for high-value sports memorabilia in the market.
