Meta Description: Fanatics and Sotheby’s latest sports card auction rakes in $2 million with iconic NBA player cards, highlighting the market’s continued demand for premium collectibles.

Fanatics and Sotheby’s recently concluded a successful collaborative auction, netting over $2 million from the sale of just 11 sports cards. The star of the show was a Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Dennis Rodman Triple Logoman card, which fetched an impressive $600,000.

Dubbed the “Exquisite | Capsule Collection,” the auction exclusively featured premium cards from Upper Deck’s Exquisite series. Among the highlights were a LeBron James 2003 Rookie Patch Autograph, a Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Kobe Bryant Dual Logoman Autograph, and a Magic Johnson and Larry Bird Dual Logoman Patch Autograph.

The auction predominantly showcased NBA legends, with an emphasis on cards featuring the likes of Michael Jordan and LeBron James, or even both. This focus underscored the persistent demand for iconic figures within the sports card market.

This collaboration marked Fanatics and Sotheby’s second successful venture, following their initial “Holy Grails” auction, where a LeBron James Exquisite card sold for $432,000. This time around, another iteration of the same card reached $456,000, indicating the enduring value of premium cards while reflecting the adjustments in the market. Just a few years back, the same card commanded prices exceeding $900,000, with similar versions soaring over $2 million in 2022.

The Exquisite line by Upper Deck reshaped the sports card landscape by introducing rookie patch autographs, which have now become must-have items for high-end collectors. Products like Panini’s National Treasures owe a great deal of their popularity to Exquisite’s innovative approach, spearheaded by Karvin Cheung in the early 2000s.

Fanatics is steadfast in its mission to elevate the hobby to new heights. Through collaborations with Sotheby’s for these high-profile auctions, they strive to position sports cards as cultural artifacts deserving of exhibition in art galleries and participation in prestigious sales events. This strategic initiative aims to redefine the perception of sports cards, showcasing their value as both collectibles and artistic masterpieces.
