Arturs Silovs: The Rising Star of Upper Deck Series 2 Young Guns

The hockey world was captivated by the unexpected rise of Arturs Silovs, a young goaltender who went from being a third-string player on the Vancouver Canucks to a standout performer in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Silovs’s journey to fame was a whirlwind, marked by unforeseen opportunities and remarkable achievements that have solidified his place as a rising star in the NHL.

Initially slated for more time in the AHL, Silovs found himself thrust into the spotlight due to injuries to key players Thatcher Demko and Casey deSmith. Despite the low expectations from many who believed the Nashville Predators would overpower him, Silovs proved his mettle on the ice. He astounded audiences with impressive saves, including a remarkable performance of 42 saves in a single game—an unparalleled feat surpassed by only two other Canucks goalies in away playoff games. While the Canucks ultimately fell to the Oilers in Game 6, Silovs’s performance stood out as a beacon of promise for the team’s future.

Before his sudden NHL ascent, Silovs had been carving a path to success in junior hockey with the Barrie Colts and on the international stage with HS Riga in Latvia. Despite being overlooked by scouting reports, the Vancouver Canucks took a chance on him by selecting him in the sixth round of the 2019 NHL Draft. Silovs’s talents shone brightly at various tournaments, notably at the World U18 Championships and the 2023 IIHF World Championships, where he played an integral role in securing a historic bronze medal for Latvia. His stellar performances established him as a national hero and a burgeoning talent in the world of hockey.

The spotlight on Silovs extended beyond the rink and into the realm of collectibles, particularly in the realm of trading cards. His rookie cards in the Upper Deck Series 2, notably the Young Guns and Canvas Young Guns, have garnered significant attention and intrigue among collectors. One of his most noteworthy cards, a Young Guns Red Outburst variant, fetched an impressive $263 in a recent sale, underscoring his growing value in the card collecting community. Beyond Upper Deck releases, Silovs’s presence in non-licensed BY cards from IIHF tournaments has further broadened his appeal, especially among European collectors.

Looking ahead, the Vancouver Canucks face pivotal decisions regarding Silovs’s role within the team, as he could potentially serve as a backup to Demko or be explored as a valuable trade asset. Regardless of the outcome, Silovs’s meteoric rise has not only elevated his status as a key player for the Canucks but has also transformed him into a sought-after figure in the world of hockey card collecting, leaving fans and collectors eager to witness his future exploits on and off the ice.
